Are you looking for a delicious snack without having to spend hours in the kitchen? Tortilla chips make a super tasty and fun appetizer for your guests. They are very easy to make and are a true crowd-pleaser. If you own a home movie theater, you can surprise your beloved family members or friends with some good movie and tasty homemade snacks alongside with some great dipping sauces.
Probably there isn’t a living person that is not a fan of chips, but if you are a health-conscious person, you know that the chips bought from stores are full of salt, empty calories, trans fats and BHT. Unlike this, corn and flour tortillas are a much healthier substitute for eating on a daily basis, depending on how you prepare them. For example, Flour tortillas are a low-fat food, and if you choose to eat whole wheat tortilla you’ll increase your fiber intake, and you’ll feel full and energized. They are an excellent source of vitamin B and iron, they support the nervous system and, provide healthy digestion, and control the cholesterol levels. Over and above corn, gluten-free and whole grains tortillas are the perfect choice for your health because two of them are lower in fat than one flour tortilla. Keep in mind that corn tortillas can be tougher than flour tortillas when baked. It’s just a matter of preference to find which one works best for you and which one your friends enjoy most.
Baked tortilla chips are a fantastic, low-guilt snack for any day of the week, especially if you are already trying to lose some weight. Because the chips are already spicy and salty, I like to serve them with tomato and sour cream dipping sauce that give some freshness into your mouth and at the same time are low in calories. Making these sauces will only take a few minutes of your precious time you want to spend with your close ones and with a little forethought you can even make larger quantities ahead of time and keep them in the refrigerator for later use.
In this recipe, I decided to use flour tortillas because I like them more. When flour tortillas are cut into wedges and baked in an oven, they become amazingly crispy like crackers and when you add some of your favorite herbs and spices they will disappear as fast as you serve them.
You can quickly bake more or fewer tortilla wedges in a small amount of time, depending on the number of people you are planning to invite to your home party. These chips are best to eat as soon as you take them out of the oven, but I don’t mind eating them after few hours when are already cold, too.
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Serves up to 4 people!
Ingredients:
8 tortillas
olive oil
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp curry
1 tsp Vegeta (or other vegetable mixed spice)
1 tbs ground dried chili pepper
Salt and pepper
Preheat the oven to 400 °F (or 200 °C)
Cut the tortillas into equal wedges. We did 6 wedges out of every tortilla, but you can make them bigger or smaller depending on your preference. Place the wedges in a big bowl and pure some olive oil on top. Blend all the spices together and sprinkle half of the mix on top of the tortillas. Afterward, by using your hands mix the tortillas, so every piece gets covered with the spice mix. Then pour the other half of the spices and mix again.
Start placing the wedges on the sides and the bottom of a big pan, in one layer. Bake them for 17-18 minutes. Serve them immediately while they are still warm.
Make these delicious dipping sauces as well:
Tomato dip
3 tbsp tomato paste
2 tsp ground dried chili pepper
Salt and pepper
Mix all ingredients until you get a homogeneous mixture.
Sour cream dip
3 tbsp sour cream
2 tsp ground caraway seeds
Salt and pepper
Mix all ingredients until you get a homogeneous mixture.
Voila!
