Pros and Cons of Long-Distance Relationships

The world appears to be becoming smaller every day. We often have to move to a different country or even continent because of a better job opportunity, school program, or living standards. The problem is that we have to leave our loved ones behind. But, do we actually have to break off even the romantic relationships, or is there another way to make it work?

Well, nowadays, long-distance relationships are becoming more and more common. Thanks to social media, video calls, and Wi-Fi, we can keep that spark alive without being physically together. However, it is not all video calls and virtual movie marathons. It can get tricky to make this kind of relationship last.

If you are considering getting into a long-distance relationship, here is some perspective on what to expect in terms of pros and cons.

Pros of LDRs

Get to improve on communication

Without communication, your long-distance relationship will not last very long. It is truly the only tool you have to build your bond and create strong foundations for a lasting relationship.

Good communication depends on how often you talk, how honest you are, and how much these talks contribute to you getting to know each other.

Can get creative with new date ideas

Phone calls and video chats are great at the beginning, but after a while, they tend to get boring. Don’t fall into that trap as the same old routine gets pretty old pretty fast.

Instead, you try to learn how to spend time together in creative ways. This creativity also helps when the distance is eventually no longer an issue as you had plenty of time to establish common interests. Visit this page to find some creative and interesting LDR date ideas.

Learn the art of smart fighting

In long-distance relationships, fights may feel more intense than they are. Being in these situations allows you to learn how to fight smart. You’ll learn how to get your points across without being toxic and unnecessarily hurtful.

Again, these are skills that translate very well into regular relationships when you are no longer separated.

The anticipation keeps things fun

Yes, being apart sucks. But distance does make the heart grow fonder.

There is something really exciting about patiently waiting for that next phone call and that next visit. You learn not to take things for granted and appreciate every moment with your beau.

Establishes a common goal

The goal is simple – to one day be together without the distance.

Whatever the reason for the separation is, having this common goal allows you to connect your lives together. This is the next level of commitment and should only be made if you are serious about taking that next step.

Builds a stronger bond

If done right, a long-distance relationship can build a stronger bond than most people in normal situations ever get to enjoy. It is a combination of all the pros we have discussed here, from learning how to communicate and express your feelings to having time for self-improvement and think of creative ways to spend time together.

Cons of LDRs

The distance sucks

The distance won’t kill you, but it will feel like it is trying to. This is especially bad when you are starting off the relationship and settling into the flow of things. It is during these first few months that most long-distance relationships fail.

Intensifies insecurities

Jealousy and insecurities, in general, also tend to be amplified in long-distance relationships. This is mainly due to the lack of contact and proximity, which is usually the best way to express affection.

The only way to successfully combat this obstacle is communication and learning how to trust each other.

Heavy on the wallet

You would think that being away from each other will save you money. After all, you don’t have to think about things like date nights, cab fares, and so on.

However, long-distance relationships can be just as expensive, if not more. Think of all the calls and internet costs, the occasional tickets for visits, and even delivery fees when you feel like shipping a gift to your bae. You will have to save up for this kind of relationship!

Loneliness galore

Being in a long-distance relationship can sometimes feel like being single. Even with those regular phone calls and texts, it is easy for loneliness to take over.

To avoid being overwhelmed by this, focus on building other friendships and family relationships, as well as on self-improvement. The relationship should not be the center of your life.

Bottom line

Love is hard work, whether you live under the same roof or on different continents. There is no ignoring the unique set of challenges brought on by a long-distance relationship. However, this does not mean that you cannot make it work.

You have to be willing to take the actions needed to build a strong and healthy LDR with your partner. And with all the pros that you can look forward to, you should be sufficiently motivated!
