I’ll always remember the first time my eyebrows were plucked. Not entirely against my will I might add. It was my two loving twin cousins who persuaded me that it was time to get rid of the mono-brow that was at the time, taking over my face. I was just hitting my teenager phase and felt like this was the right time. They told me it wouldn’t hurt – pah.
Plucking your eyebrows is painful and I’d be lying if I said it gets easier. I actually prefer getting mine waxed to painstakingly pulling out each individual hair. Taking care of your eyebrows is one way of seeing a considerable difference to the way you see yourself in the mirror. For me it gives me pride in my ‘on fleek’ eyebrows but it also gives my overall eye area, more shape and definition. Here’s a few do’s and don’ts for plucking your eyebrows if it’s your first time or even if you are a seasoned professional!
The Tools
DO use an eyebrow brush to comb through the hairs. A tip I’ve learnt, is to brush upwards at the end nearest to your nose. This helps create a more defined shape but it’s also great for trimming excess hair with nail scissors.
DON’T over trim with your scissors and be very careful when using scissors near your eyes. If you can, perhaps use an eye shield (like a pair of sunglasses) to avoid any nasty accidents.
The Technique
DO pluck one hair at a time. It may be more time-consuming but it means your hair pulling will be more precise.
DON’T pluck a big bunch of hairs out from impatience. This will not only hurt like a son of a gun but it will also pull out hairs that you may not have wanted to pull out…
The Alternative
DO try getting your eyebrows professionally waxed. As long as you aren’t allergic to the wax, waxing is a great alternative and personally I find this less painful.
DON’T let the therapist doing your eyebrow waxing, have free reign on your eyebrows. Have an idea of the shape you want them and how thick or thin you want them to be is very important. There’s nothing worse than looking in the mirror afterwards and finding your beautiful eyebrows ruined!
Plucking your eyebrows does wonders for enhancing your features and you know how the old beauty saying goes ‘you have to suffer for beauty’, or some rubbish like that.
