So you want to get healthy, get in shape, reduce stress, achieve big goals and possibly change your whole life? Yes, running can do all this for you, and more! Running literally changed my life.
But running and all the “hardcore”, “pro”-looking runners with all their fancy running gear can be intimidating – I know, I was there once too! (Over 10 years later, I’ve now run 19 marathons, 10 ultramarathons, and countless half-marathons and other races).
No need to be intimidated by running and the fancy gear. Runners are friendly, and there’s a good reason for the gear! Here’s a rundown of all the must-have basic running clothes and gear for new runners:
Running Shoes
Recommended Quantity: 1-2
First things first – shoes. Don’t bother Google’ing “Best Running Shoe” since every human and every body is different! Go to your best local running specialty store and spend some time with a shoe expert who can help you fit the best running shoe for your needs. Them you’re new and need time to find a good shoe. Most good running stores will have a treadmill for you to test shoes, and a really good store with good sales associates will know how to analyze your gait and your running style to get you the right shoes. Many experts say to rotate around your running shoes between 2-3 different pairs, but 1 shoe is fine for a beginner. Key is to make sure they’re comfortable and you like running in them!
Shorts
Recommended Quantity: 2-4
Unless you live in the artic, most places are “warm enough” to run in shorts at least half or more than half the year. So getting good, comfy, functional running shorts are important.
Of course I suggest checking out the OnlyAtoms lightweight Men’s Velocity Running Shorts and Women’s Gravity Running Shorts for the best running short out there. They fit great, are comfortable and have big pockets to carry all you need on a run. (They also happen to look good, too – I like to look good when I run!) But any brand of running short made of a lightweight, breathable fabric, with a light mesh interior “underwear” lining is what you need. I only buy running shorts with zipper pockets since I don’t want to lose my ID or credit cards or money along the run (it’s happened).
Note: when it’s hot out, run in shorts — not Capris, not Pants – running shorts. I know some are embarrassed by your body and prefer wear capris or pants even when it’s super hot and humid, but shorts are much better. Be confident and proud that you’re out there – you look beautiful regardless of your body. We all want to look good, but top priority should be comfort and function on a run.
I recommend getting at least 2-4 pairs of shorts – you really have to wash these each time you wear them, no matter what they say about the fabric, all running clothes usually smell a bit if you run more than 10 minutes in them.
Singlets / Tank Tops
Recommended Quantity: 2-6
A running singlet is really just a tank top that’s lighter and looser than most workout tanks. Look for breathable, wicking gear made of “performance fabrics” like these Men’s Running Tank Top or Women’s Running Tank Top, or any brand that’s light, comfortable and feels good. The key in shopping for running clothes is to feel good and comfortable so you’re inspired to run!
Capris & Tights
Recommended Quantity: 1-4
Running tip – don’t quit or decrease running when it’s cold. If you keep running in cold weather, your body (and mind!) will thank you for it when it warms again. It also helps avoid Seasonal Affective Disorder, and get much needed vitamin D.
Men might “insecurities” around wearing running tights, so it’s okay to wear tights underneath shorts. And we recommend a good quality running capris or tights for the ladies – like our Women’s Kinetic Running Capri, with two pockets and a great fit. If it gets super cold out, there are windproof and fleece lined running tights. Or, just layer a pair of old “fashion” tights under your capris or tights, it works!
Other Layers
Recommended Quantity: 2-4 Tees; 1-2 Jackets
Layers are the key to all season running. I usually wear a singlet on bottom, 1-2 tee-shirts on top (short and long sleeve), and top with either a windbreaker, light jacket, or half-zip shell. Running jackets help block wind and keep you warm, but should be light enough to take off and tie around your waist when you get too warm.
Running Socks
Recommended Quantity: 3-5
Regardless of how much or far you run, invest in good quality running socks. Blisters hurt and most good running socks help prevent blisters. I think some of the best running socks are by Balega and the Wrightsock anti-blister running socks I’ve been wearing for years. In rain and super cold, Smartwool socks do the job best.
Visor / Hat
Recommended Quantity: 1
I prefer a light visor so I don’t get too hot, but either a hat or visor helps keep sun off the face. Look for the lightest, most comfortable one out there. I have a North Face waterproof hat that weighs almost nothing and works wonders in the rain.
Sunblocks
Recommended Quantity: 2
I love sun, but I don’t want leathery skin – I plan to look 29 forever. No matter the time of year, I wear sunblock on my face and on all exposed body parts. I get the most sweat resistant, full-spectrum SPF 30-100 sunblock there is. Look for ones that are marketed to surfers or as “sport” sunblock. I like clear zinc oxide on my face and SPF 100 spray “sport” sunblock for my body.
Hydration pack / Bottle
Recommended Quantity: 2
Don’t forget water regardless of the weather .You’ll want at least one good hydration pack or handheld water bottle . We like Ultimate Direction, Nathan and Ultraspire hydration products.
Gloves
Recommended Quantity: 1-2
In the winter, wear gloves if you don’t want frostbite. I like the Mizuno Breath Thermo gloves — they work great and never get too sweaty. Also wear a warm hat or headband when it’s that cold out.
Reflective Vest / Headlamp
Recommended Quantity: 1
Those who like running or need to run at night or early morning should get either a reflective vest, headlamp, or some safety running gear for the dark.
It doesn’t matter if you’re just starting to run 10 minutes a day, or plan to run a marathon, the right running gear will ensure your best performance and inspire you to keep at it! If you’re ever feeling uninspired, just get some new gear outfit guarantee you’ll get you running again!
