A busy family home is often filled with love, laughter and a whole lot of chaos. Even the most tidy of individuals can quickly find their house becoming an obstacle course of toys and clothes once they become parents.

And let’s face it, between the school runs, work and weekend activities, keeping everything organised often falls to the bottom of the priority list. Whilst that is one of the great joys of parenthood, if the clutter is starting to shift from charming to overwhelming, it may be time to consider a little home reset.

Something we often put off for a rainy day, decluttering doesn’t have to be the mammoth task it’s made out to be. With some handy tools and a little help from smart Melbourne storage, you can restore calm to your home (well, at least to your belongings) without getting rid of the things your family actually needs.

Step 1: Tackle It Room by Room

One of the main reasons people avoid decluttering is because they think it has to be done all at once. It’s not true. For time-poor parents, you can work through your belongings without spending your entire weekend on it.

Rather than ending up in a flustered pile of children’s costumes and old paperwork, take it one room at a time and work through things at a pace that suits your family.

    Where to start:

    • Bedrooms — this is the perfect opportunity to get little ones involved, guiding them to make thoughtful choices about where their things should go.
    • Living areas — old baby walkers and highchairs lingering in the corner? Identifying these rarely used items is a quick win for reclaiming space.
    • Garage — it’s the land of long-forgotten equipment. If belongings haven’t seen the light of day in years, it may be time to part ways.

As a general rule of thumb, if you don’t need something daily but it’s still useful occasionally, it’s a strong candidate for local storage. Items that are no longer seasonal or have simply run their course can be sold or donated to charity for a second lease of life.

Step 2: Move Things to Storage

Not everything that leaves your home has to leave your life for good. Rather than saying a dramatic goodbye to once much-loved belongings, consider putting them into storage instead. Transitioning seasonal items out of the home gives you room to breathe.

That’s right, no more exercise bikes collecting dust in the middle of the hallway and toys flooding the home office. Storage is the ideal middle ground for those belongings that aren’t getting the attention they deserve at home but aren’t quite ready to be let go of either. For instance:

    • Winter clothes and holiday decorations
    • Baby products, toys and nursery furniture
    • Sports equipment, hobby gear and camping supplies
    • Precious family keepsakes, photographs and memorabilia
    • That ever-growing pile of documents building up on the kitchen side

Moving these items into a secure storage facility frees up valuable space at home without forcing you into any permanent decisions.

Step 3: Get the Whole Family on Board

As the saying goes, many hands make light work, and when it comes to decluttering, having the whole family involved certainly beats one person tackling it alone at ten o’clock on a Sunday night. Not only does it make the job much easier, it also helps build positive habits that can last a lifetime.

A few ideas to make it stick:

    • Let the children take the lead on deciding which toys to store, donate or keep. It gives them a sense of ownership and makes them far less likely to protest when it comes to saying goodbye to things.
    • Have them choose which charity they’d like to donate to, helping them understand the good they’re doing in the process.
    • Keep a designated “storage box” somewhere in the home as a gentle, ongoing reminder of the decluttering habit.

With small, consistent efforts like these, decluttering transforms from an overwhelming chore into an easy afternoon spent together as a family.

Step 4: Create Space Without Sacrifice

Decluttering as a family can feel daunting, particularly when it comes to parting with items that hold such fond memories. But as we’ve shown, creating space in your home doesn’t have to mean sacrificing what you love. By working with a local, reliable storage company, you can move non-essential items out of the house while keeping them safely within reach.

Some storage companies, like Holloway Removals & Storage, will even collect and move your belongings into storage for you. This means no little feet tripping over boxes and no scratched walls from heavy furniture. It’s a win-win for everyone.

So, what are you waiting for? With the right tools to hand and the whole family on board, you can create a home where everyone has space to breathe.
