- Vinyl: Vinyl gutters come with the cheapest price tag but also have the shortest lifespan of common gutter materials at 10 to 20 years. Cold temperatures cause brittleness and cracking, while UV exposure leads to fading and warping in hot climates.
- Copper: Copper gutters are a clear leader in terms of longevity and can endure for 50 years or more, outlasting the roof and many other components of the home. They come at a premium price but require minimal maintenance.
- Zinc: While this material is more popular in Europe than the US, they offer a profile similar to copper gutters. They can last anywhere from 50 up to 100 years and develop a protective patina over time.
What Shortens a Gutter’s Lifespan
Even a high-quality gutter system can wear prematurely under certain conditions. Some of the most common factors that cause this are:
- Neglected Maintenance: Gutters that become clogged with leaves, dirt, and standing water create an environment that can lead to rust, rot, and sagging. The excess weight from debris-filled gutters also places stress on the fasteners and fascia over time.
- Climate: Homes in regions with freeze-thaw cycles experience more wear to gutters than those in mild climates. Ice dams forming in the channel put tremendous pressure on the gutters and attached hangers. High humidity or substantial tree coverage can accelerate the accumulation of debris and moisture, both of which speed up corrosion and physical deterioration.
