With Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of Fitzgerald classics from 1925, ‘The Great Gatsby’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, 20s glamour returns to the fashion scene.
Tiffany & CO. designed a special line of jewelry made of diamonds and pearls that the character of Daisy wears. It is known that Fitzgerald himself was a regular customer of the brand. Tiffany also made silver decorations that are the part of the interior of the Gatsby home.
Fashion of the 20s
The tight corsets and forms that emphasize the feminine curves were abandoned, and fashion has become casual and fluffy. The main piece has become a dress with a dropped waist, relaxed and loose, made of fine materials such as silk or georgette and further decorated with cutouts, fringe, feathers, etc. Flapper dresses were straight and loose, and the women looked slim and youthful in them. The breasts were flattened, torso elongated, waist unstressed, and a belt low on the hips. Dresses were sometimes pleated, slowly slid down the body and often had transparent parts and embroidery.
Men’s fashion at the time implied elegant and relaxed suits with a vest, bow ties and tuxedos, with details such as decorative cufflinks. The suits have lost traditional wide straps, were tailored differently with slim shoulders, and depicted a slim, boyish look. Daily look meant sporty elegance, jackets with angled cut of the shoulder, sweaters, short pants, berets and so on.
Striking accessories
This fashion trend was evident in the accessories, too – the hats of various sizes and brimmed hats with sequins, purses made of glossy materials, shoes with straps, silk scarves, shawls and coats made of feathers, imaginative jewelry, straps worn around the head, hair accessories and the like were the staple of this fashion era and thanks to the remake of the movie ‘The Great Gatsby’, they are getting more popular on the present fashion scene.
The essence of the film
Prada presented 40 garments which were designed for the modern version of ‘The Great Gatsby’. The creations are adapted models from previous Prada or Miu Miu collection and reflect the spirit of the ’20s. Luxurious clothing such as orange dress made of organza with embroidery imitating fish scales or deep blue dress with the typical cut and knee-length were presented.
To the splendor of the main ball in the film contributed a number of variations on the 20s theme, and gold dress covered in crystals worn by the heroine Daisy Buchanan is particularly interesting. The dress is made of a special kind of silk and decorated with beads, stones, sequins and fringe.
All eyes were definitely on the young actress Carey Mulligan and her tremendous transformation when it comes to fashion style, as well as how she expressed the demanding role of Daisy Buchanan. Daisy is a modern but a classic girl, and designer, Miuccia Prada is responsible for the glamorous dresses in the shades of reseda green, sapphire blue, golden yellow, violet and silver.
Beautiful jewelry
Jewelry for the film was done by Tiffany House, in collaboration with Catherine Marlen. There are tiaras with diamonds and pearls, pearl necklaces and earrings, gaudy dangle earrings, barrettes and hair bands, carved bracelets, etc. Details can be found everywhere, such as enamel cufflinks in men’s shirts and silver flask used by the hero of the film. Tiffany jewelry is imaginatively modernized.
A fashion trend that was initiated by the film ‘The Great Gatsby’ inspired many designers to offer clothing pieces in their seasonal collections that are closer or further associated with the 20s fashion. ‘The Great Gatsby’ takes us back to the glamour, wealth and thoughts about the American dream, the brilliance of the great parties and entertainment and jazz music.
