Once upon a time there was a country that, in just a little over 500 years became a ruling power in the world, a trend setter, a media mogul, in a word – everything. This country has so successfully and so cleverly sold us the idea of the American dream, treated us with various dogmas, ideas and (un)certainties, shaking our belief system to the core.
If it weren’t for this country we wouldn’t have a Madonna. No Jay Z, either. There would be no Edgar Allan Poe. Or Warhol. We wouldn’t have the internet, either. If this country didn’t decide to teach us the painful benefits of reality TV, we’d be clueless on the subject, also. Most of the ridiculousness coming from this country is so intellectually freezing that at times it appears to be a systematic attack onto our collective awareness and understanding of what we know and who we are. However, with the same passion we’d argument against it – we are loving every single thing and/or person coming to us from the Americas. Kim Kardashian and her family, included.
If you’ve been keeping up with Kardashians like most of the planet has (even if you haven’t, you couldn’t have escaped them, them being one of the most popular topics on TV for the past almost-decade), you’ve been there to witness all the changes, exciting moments, life situations, fashion makeovers, business deals, weddings, transitions, etc. this family has gone through. A topic that never fails to provoke an emotion, whether that particular emotion is a good or a bad one, is the life of Mrs Kim Kardashian West.
Kim Kardashian is one of those social phenomena you can’t really categorize. Is she a mind numbingly annoying personality or an absolutely fascinating woman, patiently curving her way to even bigger fame through her clever entrepreneurship? We can’t really say. What we can do is admit she is one of the most talked about women in the world and observe her through lenses of her actions, her achievements, fashion evolvement and her status of a fashion icon.
Mrs West started building her way to the top from Paris Hilton’s closet (she worked as a closet organizer) through red carpet events with Miss Hilton by her side and finally let her now around-the-world-famous-curves bring her unthinkable fame. Naturally, we will never forget the Ray J video and the rumor her mommager Kris was the one to release it. At the time – if you had a home video, fame was practically guaranteed. Coincidence? Oh, well.
Anyway, in the midst of New York Fashion Week, we’ve decided to give a bit of a closer inspection of Kim Kardashian’s fashion evolution. It’s true, we could’ve picked anyone else but given that the most prevalent face of fashion in the US is the Kardashian family, it only seems appropriate. On top of that, Kim Kardashian’s style has evolved more than any other famous person we know.
Kim’s Armenian origins have given her the beautifully dark skin and hair, the hourglass figure and killer charm. At the time of her rising to the stars, the prevalent body type of Hollywood was thin, slim and a bit skeleton-like figure, promoted by runway models and their icon-representative Kate Moss. However, Kim’s curves made such a boom like Hollywood hasn’t seen probably since Marylin Monroe! She immediately became the talk of the town and everyone wanted a piece of her now-famous derriere. Over night, Kim was the girl who sparked up Hollywood.
She was a typical LA girl – too much glitter, leopard, gold, pvc, over accessorizing, big hair, heavy makeup and a loooooot of skin. What she wore had nothing to do with class and style – it was more of a kitchy attempt to look good, absolutely deprived of anything that could be categorized as “class”.
Kim is really short (1.55m) and has extremely voluptuous body. You’d think that for a moment stopped her from flaunting those curves whenever she could? No way. Sheer tops with her breasts often bare, accentuated hips and buttocks and too much color and print were for a long time her signature style. Kim Kardashian was a picture perfect of kitsch, distaste and exaggeration on every front. However, as the time passed and Kim was getting more and more famous, her style changed too. She got into the company of famous stylists, designers, makeup artists and hairstylist. From an over-the-top-too-much-of-everything girl, Kim became a style icon, minimizing her look to nudes, blacks, overall darker colors, toned down makeup and demure hair. Her body is still super curvatious and the subject of envy and/or ridicule of many, but she’s been making such amazing fashion choices lately that there’s rarely anyone who can say they wouldn’t want to own her closet for a day… or an eternity.
It’s evident her style’s changed much since her hubby Kanye West came into her life. We’ve witnessed the closet makeover she had at the beginning of their relationship (yes, it was on camera!) and we may now see she’s a passionate lover of haute couture and best friends with Mr Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy and Olivier Rousteing of Balmain. Who wouldn’t!
With her changed style, Kim’s become an inspiration not only to her little sisters Kylie, who is on a rapid climb for Kim’s throne, but to women around the world.
And while we believe Kanye to be the reason her style’s changed over night, their stylist Andre Leon Talley, formerly of Vogue claims that’s not the case. He admittedly says she loves to please her husband and listens to his advice, but that she’s grown as a person and the knows what she likes now. She knows what looks good on her, she wants to be taken seriously and she dresses that way.
Well, good for you, Kim! Keep up the good work!
