While we do appreciate everything about Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen and other geniuses of their time, not everything has to be about them and the Europe and US. A keen eye for fashion and a phenomenal fashion vision go beyond continents and times which is yet again proved with a closer look into Australian fashion designers’ scope of work. Our selected designers are simply breathtaking. Their signature styles are vibrant, exciting and groundbreaking, which is why we believe that it’s important they immediately start headlining!
To all of you who are looking to push the envelope and trust someone else other than the European and American brilliance, here are a few of our favorite Aussie visionaries and their magnifique styles:
Alex Perry
This Sydney-born designer, named Australia’s premier Couturier is, by far, Australia’s most glamorous designer known for his magnificent, red-carpet-ready gowns. Perry’s feminine silhouettes, dramatic gowns, jeweled corsets and sexy sheaths have become his trademark signature and there isn’t anything about his design that we don’t adore. And, we’re not the only ones! Perry has lined impressive clientele including Megan Gale, Natalie Portman, Gigi Hadid, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna. Brava!
Maticevski
Toni Maticevski is a gorgeous hybrid of Zac Posen and Roland Mouret, and every Red Carpet star should know of him – and wear him. His grand, knockout gowns have attracted plenty of celebrities, and for a reason. The richness of his materials and design is captivating; wear Maticevski and you’re Grace Kelly on the French Riviera. It’s that simple.
Zimmermann
Sisters and co-founders Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, are Sydney-born artists who have created something truly magnificent with their namesake label back in 1991. Their design “exudes a delicate femininity which you can’t find anywhere else, making the label a NYFW favorite and a go-to for celebs across the globe”.
Even though Zimmermann label first came to prominence with killer swimwear, their designing path evolved so much so that, these days, you cannot think of a perfectly patterned, lace detailed dresses without immediately going into “This is Zimmermann, right?” mode.
Dion Lee
Dion Lee, “the most critically lauded, and awarded, fashion innovator to emerge from Australia” does sleek construction better than anyone. With great attention to detail, he takes bold chances with asymmetry, cut-outs and fabrications, making each piece as memorable as the next. Still, there’s always something truly smooth about his designs, no matter how daring his designs may be.
Lee’s commitment to designing cutting-edge garments for both working women and party girls is absolutely amazing; due to his superb talent and phenomenal execution, he’s gained international acclaim and commercial support both in Australia and other countries. He was also the first designer to ever stage a runway at the Sydney Opera House.
Sass & Bide
Sass & Bide, the Australian-founded label, has gone from strength to strength since it was established in 1999. Known for its tough-bohemian denim and leathers as well as heavy embellishments the label is now sold in over 20 countries worldwide, and has walked LFW and NYFW runways.
Michael Lo Sordo
In hands of Lo Sordo, striking classic yet minimalist aesthetic is paired with slouchy silhouettes and ladylike fits that look both effortless and contemporary chic. Women who wear Sordo are edgy, yet still love to show off their femininity and genteel charm.
While the list of fantastic Australian designers goes longer than this one, we’ll stop here and leave some delight for some other time. If you had to chose one, who’d be your designer of choice?
